There are many wonderful books, games, and learning tools available to support children as they learn to read. This page features resources that complement the phonics-based approach used throughout the ReadyBloomReaders workbook series.
These recommendations are completely optional, but they can provide additional opportunities to practice reading skills in fun and engaging ways. New resources will be added over time as more favorites are discovered.
Favorite Decodable Book Series
Decodable books give children the opportunity to practice the phonics skills they have already learned. Because the words follow predictable spelling patterns, beginning readers can focus on applying their decoding skills rather than guessing at unfamiliar words.
Bob Books is one of my favorite decodable book series for beginning readers. The books are short, carefully sequenced, and gradually increase in difficulty, allowing children to build confidence as their reading skills grow. They complement the phonics-based approach used throughout the ReadyBloomReaders workbook series.
Favorite Books for New Readers
Books for children who have mastered basic decoding and are ready for simple stories with more natural language.
Favorite Read-Aloud Books
Books that adults read to children to build vocabulary, comprehension, and a love of reading.
Favorite Learning Games
Learning to read should be both effective and enjoyable. These phonics games provide meaningful practice while reinforcing important reading skills through hands-on, engaging activities.
Favorite Learning Manipulatives
Sometimes children learn best when they can see, touch, and move objects as they practice new skills. These hands-on tools support phonemic awareness, phonics, and early reading development through active learning.
Favorite Organization & Storage
Keeping reading materials organized makes it easier to create a consistent learning routine. These storage solutions help keep books, games, and learning activities neat, accessible, and ready to use.
Favorite Reading Resources
These additional resources don’t fit into a single category but are worth sharing. They provide extra support, encouragement, and opportunities to make learning to read both successful and enjoyable.
